Slept in the drawing office of a tile factory

The ceramics works that stood on this bend of the Maas closed a long time ago. Its 1920s office building did not. We kept the glazed tile dados, the brass door furniture and the cast-concrete stair, put 53 rooms behind the old corridors, and left the rest looking like what it was, a place where people drew plates for a living.

Breakfast happens in the drawing hall, under the north light the draughtsmen worked by. The courtyard outside is paved in kiln brick that nobody has had the heart to replace.

The hotel also has its own small casino on the first floor, inside this building and up the stair from the lobby.

Stay

Fifty-three rooms, no two corridors the same

The office plan survived intact, so the rooms come in the shapes the building already had. Clerks' rooms are narrow and tall, while the managers' end of the second floor is a different shape altogether.

Room type 01

Draughtsman

A single-window room on the second floor with the original tile dado to shoulder height, a deep sill wide enough to sit on, and a bed that looks out of the window instead of towards the door.

  • Tile dado
  • Rain shower
  • Desk

Room type 02

Glaze Room

Twin or king at the quiet end of the building, finished in the blue the works used on its sanitary ware, with a bath set against an exposed section of 1920s brick.

  • Bath
  • Courtyard view
  • Twin or king

Room type 03

Director's Corner

Six corner rooms where the directors kept their offices, each with two aspects, a working fireplace surround in moulded tile, and a sofa that takes a third person at a push.

  • Corner aspect
  • Sofa bed
  • Extra space

Eat & drink

Four rooms, four jobs

Everything is under this roof. Only the private room needs booking, and only at weekends.

The Drawing Hall

Breakfast under the sawtooth north light, served long and slow: Limburg vlaai, eggs cooked to order, cheese from a stall at the Markt, and coffee that keeps coming until the last table gives up.

Daily 07:00–11:00

Dado

The ground-floor restaurant, named for the tilework that runs the length of it. The menu is short, mostly Limburg and Belgian produce, and it goes up on a board each afternoon and gets crossed off as things run out.

Tue–Sat 18:00–22:30

Kiln Court

The courtyard, paved in salvaged kiln brick and warm enough from April. You can get beer from Limburg brewers, cold white wine, bread and anchovies, and it closes at eleven out of respect for the neighbours.

April–October, afternoons on

The Pattern Room

A private dining room for twelve on the first floor, still lined with the shallow drawers that held the works' pattern sheets. You agree a single menu with the kitchen a day ahead.

Bloemgracht House Casino: a small casino upstairs

18+

From the lobby, take the cast-concrete stair beside reception up one flight, or take the lift. The door at the top opens onto the casino. It belongs to this hotel and sits under the same roof as your room, so you reach it without stepping outside, and the casino has no address of its own down the street.

The floor is compact, with a few tables, a short bar along the tiled wall and chairs for about forty. It opens in the evenings only, and on a Saturday it fills early.

  • Dress Collared shirt or equivalent and smart shoes. Sportswear and beachwear are not admitted.
  • Age and ID Everyone on the casino floor is 18 or over, and photo ID is checked at the door on every visit, familiar faces included.
  • Limits The staff on duty set these on the floor instead of printing them, so ask before you sit down.
  • Self-exclusion Arranged in person at reception with the duty team. Tell the desk and it takes a few minutes.

This is a land-based casino inside a hotel in Maastricht, open to guests and to visitors who pass the door check. The website itself offers no online casino games and takes no bets, deposits or payments.

Getting around

A small city, mostly walkable

  • Maastricht station

Eleven minutes on foot, over the Wilhelminabrug. Intercity trains run north to Eindhoven and Amsterdam; the stopping service heads south towards the border.

  • Bikes at the desk

Fourteen hotel bikes, free for guests, with a lock and a paper map of the Jeker valley. The courtyard gate is the easiest way out with one.

  • Liège, Aachen, Brussels

Liège is about half an hour by road, Aachen a little more, Brussels under two hours by train with one change. Three countries before lunch is a normal thing to do here.

  • The old town on foot

Vrijthof, the Bonnefanten and the bookshop in the Dominican church are all inside twenty minutes' walk. Maastricht Aachen Airport sits roughly twenty minutes north by taxi.
